Re-encode your iTunes library.

I was surfing the Apple Discussion boards, (http://discussions.apple.com) and came across this great tip on how to re-encode your entire iTunes library from John Sutherland

In the iTunes preferences pane, select the advanced tab. Then, under 'import using', select MP3 (or your chosen format).

Click OK, then click the advanced menu, and click 'Consolidate Library'. Alternatively click on a song you want converted and via the advanced menu again, click 'Convert Selection to MP3'. As John points out, this will create a duplicate of your song, and you can delete the original.

The problem I run into is that I quickly lose track of which song is the duplicate, and which is the original. A quick way to tell is by ctrl+clicking (right clicking on PC's) the song and clicking Get Info. Under the summary / general tab, it'll display the encoding format, and you can use this to differentiate between the new MP3 song and the original song.

Happy Mac'ing!

iTunes Update 7.1.1

Lately the MacTake has become a bit of a news blog, content has been difficult to churn out because of work and scholarly schedules. Fear not however, I carry a trusty notepad around everywhere with me and with it I note down all sorts of crazy ideas. Suffice it to say, there's good stuff coming folks.

The official line from Apple is as follows:
"iTunes 7.1.1 addresses a stability issue and minor compatibility problems in iTunes 7.1."

Happy Mac'ing

TV Shows & Movies to roll out over Commonwealth?

The rumour mill is turning again, this time stirred by a 'clue' found in the Parental Control Pref Pane.

Under the drop-down, there are 6 country choices: Australia, United States, The United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada and New Zealand.

What is interesting (and incredibly annoying) is that the TV Show area is grayed out for the UK, but available for all the other countries. It typifies the inefficient bureaucracy of this country.

"Technology? Future? Jolly good, but after tea."

iTunes 7.1 & Quicktime 7.1.5 Updates Released

Apple just rolled out updates for iTunes and Quicktime, bringing both of the apps to versions 7.1 and 7.1.5 respectively.

8 major security flaws were fixed for Quicktime, so I'd recommend the update. As for iTunes, a basic round up of perceptible changes are as follows:

Added support for Apple TV which looks exciting:

Added this amazing full-screen coverflow feature ( Pretty sure it wasn' there before ):

Full screen looks like this:

Also added a new 'Sorting' tab under the get info for each media file:

And finally looks like some minor bug fixes all round, the messy text column problem (rhymes nicely) seems to have gone away forever.

Reminder:
To download the update, click the Blue (or grey) Apple at the top left menu, and click Software Update.

New iTunes 'Just for you' beta Roll Out

Now I don't know how long this has been up, but I noticed it just now whilst browsing iTunes for some music. Nothing too new, I'm nice and comfortable in my musical taste niche (if you will).

Scrolling down, I see iTunes has suggested to me songs it thinks I will like. And well, apart from the KT Tunstall (which I may probably actually listen to one day, just to be open to change), its pretty on track.

I know this technology has been around for ages, and is relatively easy to code into anything from php to the dreaded visual basic, but to me at least its news and fairly exciting to see it being rolled out on the iTunes store.

You can tell the system that you already own a song that it has suggested, or that you really don't like it.

Just a note, I don't believe that this is going to be available for users without an account, but if someone has the chance it'd be great to have that checked out.
