App Pick: RCDefaultApp★
Ever had files that refused to open with your application of choice? I own Dreamweaver but much prefer TextMate so when I go to a folder and see all my files with Dreamweaver icons I have to drag each of them to TextMate on the dock before I can continue my development work.Control clicking, and setting always open with is far too tedious, and the whole process just bugs me. Dreamweaver won't let me say, "Hell, I don't like you, relinquish your grasp on my files and give them to TextMate", and TextMate won't take the offensive and snatch back what belongs to it.
So I found a great app called RCDefaultApp so cunningly named from Rubicode. It's good, it's very good indeed.
Install it, and it simply adds a preference pane to System Preferences. Open that pane and every option, preference and parameter related to the art of double clicking files is available to change as you see fit.
With a few clicks I had confirmed TextMate's position as Big Daddy. With a few more I could've given the title to TextEdit. Which would have been blaspheme, and then I would've been burned.
So check it out, its worth having around for when a filetype goes awol, or starts misbehaving.

Happy Mac'ing!

News Scoop.★
Things with StreamK are moving along so quickly now and I'm really proud of our development and design team. They're working extremely well together, and achieving things I never thought possible with the web platform we're working on. The StreamK gui which is due for release some time this month is looking more and more like a well-crafted software program, and less like a website. One of the big trade-offs we've had to make however, is with web standards. Although every line of our html and css is w3c compliant, we've had to rely on some very javascript for some of the more complex functions within the gui. It means people with dinosaur browsers, or who have simply turned javascript off will have a great degree of difficulty using the gui. Naturally, I'm not happy with this at all. I don't want to sidestep users who for whatever reason need their javascript turned off.
However I think its about time the industry moved forward. Javascript should have been around long enough for it to be taken as verse. It should be embedded in all browsers known to man. Even phone browsers. And I believe that using simple javascript within a page should be completely acceptable under the web standards umbrella.
Don't worry though, if you are planning to use your phone to access the StreamK gui there will be a entirely text-based version of it released along with the full version.
Enough talk about Dunhenry, more talk about Mac.
Apple has released the iPhone to shelves and drooling customers in the US (duh!). I happen to be in the UK and haven't really been able to get my hands on one. If you own an iPhone, write in to me at skippy@mactake.streamk.com and tell me what you think of it. Pros, cons and all in between.
Apple has also released Audio updates, Security updates and Safari security updates. Worth getting if you ask me!
Not quite sure what the audio update did, but things seem to be louder yet again. Still no idea how that actually helps me though, it was already plenty loud.
Everybody see the new iTunes ad featuring Paul McCartney? That was refreshing. Good to see old grievances buried with the hatchet.
A new version of iTunes was released which does.... what? It changes some colours, and that's all I can see as different. Although the colours are nice, I feel like I have to be missing something. Tell me what it is folks, if you've noticed. ( I should probably just read the update information ).
Joost has released yet another version which seems to behave a little better on OSX. It features a bunch of new channels, and a bunch of really irritating advertisements.
Since when did L'Oreal have anything to do with Alliance Atlantis' sci fi movies? I've grown a distinct hate for the brand and everything it stands for (minus pretty girls). Please, bring back car ads, IBM ads or anything more tasteful.
More later!
